But there’s more to these little critters than meets the eye. Did you know that fireflies have a unique life cycle that makes them even more fascinating? They start off as eggs laid in the ground, hatch into larvae, and spend their early years munching on snails and slugs. When they reach adulthood, they only live for a few short weeks, during which time they mate and lay their own eggs. And the flashing patterns we see during this time are all part of their mating ritual- the males flash to attract females, while the females respond with their own flashes to signal their interest. It’s like a secret code that only they can decipher
